Benediction, or The Prayer

Benediction, or The Prayer

Annabel Mahoney

O! God of battles!
May they take him through the head
before he knows too much
O! God of Battles! May he fall well
(May he fall into bed)
so he may come back to me

Hear me Lord; he is only a boy;
Protect him and bring
Him home. (Lord I pray
that he be brought home)

Tell me now son,
is the wound-man sweet with you?
Does he do with you all the things that
I would have him do?

And I pray for him to be shot
in the cheek; the leg; the arm –
Any way to bring him back to me
to hold him close from harm

And yet! They say,
in Motherhood’s sacred text
Thou shalt let go of thy sons,
Thou shalt release them to the next
(the Next War)

Slew of irony and greed but I,
My baby boy but thee,
You might have gone to the War but I
did not give you willingly.
