Literary Magazine

Nightingale & Sparrow is a literary magazine and small press featuring poetry, short fiction, creative nonfiction, and photography.

Nightingale and Sparrow aims to soar through written and visual arts. We want to publish work that takes the earthly and makes it ethereal. Send us your deepest thoughts, most poignant memories, and flights of fancy.

Issues are published quarterly, typically in February, May, August, and November. In addition to the online magazine, each issue is available in print and each piece is archived here on our website. Contributors are also welcome to submit an audio recording of their written piece.

Each issue is themed, with themes being announced prior to the start of each year. Issues are split as evenly as possible between poetry and prose, with photos interspersed throughout the magazine.

All of our pieces are selected from our open submissions period, generally March, June, September, and December. Submissions are fee-free—we want Nightingale & Sparrow to be as accessible as possible.

Submissions decisions are made by our editor-in-chief, Juliette Sebock, and (starting with issue no. IV, nevermore) selected pieces edited by our section editors.

Prior to each issue’s publication, Nightingale & Sparrow shares a series of micropoems across social media with the same theme as the upcoming issue. These pieces are published exclusively across our Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook; micropoems are archived on the site with their issue but are not included in the online or print editions.
